St. Albans Area Guide

This Cathedral city lies East of Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, and is approximately 24 miles outside of the capital, London. St. Albans was the first major town on the Old Roman Road of Watling Street for travellers heading north and it became the Roman city of Verulamium. Fast forward to the present day; St. Albans has been voted as one of the Top 10 Places to live in Britain.

This town boasts heritage, culture, outstanding restaurants and bars, and incredible outdoor trails, hikes and views. The Verulamium Museum tells the story of everyday life in Roman Britain and has many objects/artefacts from the excavations of the all-important Roman Town. The St. Albans Museum and Gallery is located in the old St. Albans Town Hall and focuses on the history of the town as well as the towns namesake; Saint, Alban. Home to The Saracens and the OA Saints rugby teams, there is always something to do and see in St. Albans. St. Albans takes its name from the first British Saint, Alban. His body was probably buried outside the city walls in a Roman cemetery near the present Cathedral. His hillside grave became a place of pilgrimage. The century-old Cathedral featuring medieval wall paintings is positioned in Verulamium Park. The park has ornamental lakes, and the remains of the city’s ancient Roman walls stand strong throughout the park.

Verlamion, meaning “settlement over or by the marsh”, was the Celtic name given to the Iron Age settlement which lay 2km to the west of where the present day, modern city lies. The Roman city of Verulamium, the second largest town in Roman Britain after Londinium, developed from the Iron Age settlement and was granted the rank of a municipium (municipality) around AD 50.

In 1996 excavations were done and produced finds which included silver coins from the Roman Republic era, dating from 90/80 BC. There was evidence of trade with the republic and that settlement already existed on the site 50 years before Julius Caesar attempted to invade Britain.

Today, the culture life with regular concerts and theatre productions held at venues including Trestle Arts Base, The Horn, St. Albans Abbey, The Pioneer Club, and The Alban Arena. The Odyssey cinema on London Road is an independent cinema that was restored and re-opened in 2014. Originally opened in 1931, it stands on the site of the Alpha Picture House which was Hertfordshire’s first cinema and opened in 1908. The Watercress nature reserve is by the river Ver and is run by the Watercress Wildlife Association.

Transport Links

St. Albans is a city north of London, in the commuter belt and the greater London Built-up Area. St. Albans City Railway Station is 20 minutes from London St. Pancras International. The line connects to a variety of other London stations including West Hampstead (Jubilee line), Kentish Town (Northern line) and Farringdon (Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith and City line). Direct services also run between Gatwick, Airport, Luton Airport and Brighton.

The north south M1 motorway runs west to St. Albans and the M25 motorway is slightly further south. The A414 road runs directly south of St. Albans between Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield. The A405 provides a direct link to Watford.

By car, Bedford is a 35-minute drive away, Brighton is 1h 35 minutes and Rainham is 2h 18 minutes.

Arrival Bus Service connects St. Albans to Hemel Hempstead, Watford, Luton, and Welwyn Garden City.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

This pub dates back to the 8^th century (AD 793) and has survived plagues and wars. The pub you see today was built in the 11^th century and is located just across the road from the St. Albans Cathedral. Used apparently by the monks, there are tunnels running from the beer cellar in the pub to the Cathedral. The Peahen

14 London Road, AL1 1NG

1480 is the first known mention of the Peahen. In the 18^th century when London Road was under construction, the Peahen was merged with the adjoining pub and traded as a hotel. Sadly, towards the end of the 19^th century, the wooden building burnt to the ground. It was rebuilt in its current form. It offers contemporary yet traditional cocktails with fresh and seasonal options on the food menu. There is an outdoor courtyard which is a great suntrap in the summer.

The Horn

In the 1970’s, this site changed from a hotel to a public house called The Horn of Plenty. The Horn built a reputation as a great live music venue and has seen many a legend walk the halls. Having undergone several refurbishments and changes in ownership over the years, The Horn still hosts musicians, local acts and has a private function area called The Barn.

The St. Albans Cathedral

Situated on the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain and standing at 144 feet high, the St. Albans Cathedral, officially referred to as the Cathedral and Abbey Church. Named after Saint Alban, the Cathedral is 556 feet in length, making it the second in size only to Winchester Cathedral. Remains of the 13^th century frescoes, including notable depiction of the Crucifixion, are on the column flanking the north side. Built in 1077, it took 38 years to build, and this is the reason it has a single, consistent style which is Early English Gothic. In total, 70 tonnes of stone, 3000 tonnes of timber and 450 tonnes of lead were used in the construction of the Cathedral. The Cathedral is open everyday and offers guided tours as well as Sunday services.

Verulamium Park

Named after the Roman City of Verulamium on which it stands, this popular attraction offers over 100 acres of beautiful parkland close to the city centre. The outline of the London Gate and City Wall can still be seen. The park boasts a lake, green parklands, children’s play equipment, sports facilities, and cafes. From bird watching to enjoying an ice cream in nature, the park is located within a few minutes of the town centre. Verulamium Park was the third largest Roman City in Britain and was the first official and formalised municipality in Britain.

The St. Albans Street Market

Every Wednesday and Saturday, the Charter Market takes place, and it dates to the 9^th century. The current day market which is from St. Peter’s Street to Market Place, offers an excellent shopping experience.

Farmers Market: On the 2^nd Sunday of every month, local farmers, growers, and producers sell their own produce direct to the public. The market is on from 08:00 – 14:00 and you can expect to find local specialties, mouth-watering cheeses, seasonal fruit and vegetables, fresh herbs, top quality meat and game meat, and dairy products too. There is hand crafted freshly bakes breads, cakes, and cookies, as well as the best Mexican Burritos, South African biltong, Spanish Iberico sliced to order, stone fired Italian pizzas, Persian meats, and delicacies, local made honey and so much more. Saunter through the city streets whilst enjoying in the stall’s delights.

The Clock Tower

Built in the Old Town, the clock tower is a rare example of belfry. St Albans people had the tower built in 1405, as a symbol of their resistance against the Abbot of St. Albans. Climb the 93 stairs to the top and enjoy the magnificent views of historic St. Albans. The original bell, named Gabriel, still rings on the hour. The clock mechanism, built in 1866, can also be seen still working. Not wheelchair or buggy accessible.

St. Albans Museum and Gallery

A centre of arts and culture, showcasing over 2,000 years of priceless heritage. The grand 19^th century building regularly changes exhibitions and offers a vibrant program of events.

Heartwood Forest

Heartwood Forest is the largest newly planted forest in the country. It is home to over half a million new saplings, stunning ancient woodlands, a native botanical garden specialising in trees and other woody plants, and a community orchard. There are more than 10 miles of paths and bridleways to explore. Located either side of the B651 between Sandridge and Wheathamstead village, and only 2.5 miles north of St. Albans city centre.

Redbournbury Mill

Redbournbury Lane & Redbourn Road, St Albans AL3 6RS

Redbournbury is a working mill, producing a range of stoneground organic flours. The mill was extensively restored after a fire in 1987. This is the last working mill on the river Ver. Baked with the mills stoneground flour, the mill produces a wide range of breads. Bread is available from the bakery stall every Saturday from 09:00 – 13:00.

Fishpool Street

Take a stroll down Fishpool Street and soak up the rich architecture and thousand-year-old history. Part of the St. Albans Conservation Area, Fishpool Street was believed to be there long before the Monastery (Abbey)was founded. The fisherman worked in the fish pools, which possibly them or their predecessor’s formed by damming the river Ver. The street had many inns and ale houses, however in 1826 when the new Verulam Road was opened and traffic was no longer diverted passed the Abbey, trade along Fishpool Street gradually declined. Victorian and Edwardian villas were built, but it was less than a desirable area to visit. After World War II, the street began to revive, and old buildings and Manor Houses were restored, and the street became desirable once more. The Odyssey

This historic cinema dates back to 1908. In 2010, the building was purchased after having been left in a derelict state for more than 15 years. A local campaign helped raise the money to restore the cinema back to her 1930 glory days.
