Harewood is a charming, sought-after village in the North of Leeds in West Yorkshire. Situated in beautiful countryside, Harewood offers perfect surroundings for those looking for a picturesque environment steeped in history.

Things to do

In the heart of Harewood is the magnificent Grade I Listed Harewood House. Harewood House offers visitors beautiful grounds which include the house itself, lakes, parks, a castle, and gardens; which have been nominated for the Garden of the Year 2021. Take in the scenery and history of the area and make sure you keep an eye out for the wild deer that roam the grounds. Harewood house is also a popular venue for music, outdoor cinema, theatre, and car meets, so there’s always something new and exciting going on at the grand house. As well as this, the Harewood Estate features the set of popular television soap Emmerdale and allows you to book a tour and have a day out at the home of your favourite TV stars. Within the picturesque surroundings of the village are several popular golf clubs with Moor Allerton, Wetherby, and Rudding Park golf clubs, all within a short drive of the village. This makes the area perfect for honing your golf skills whilst having a good variety of courses to keep things fresh. If you’re looking for something a bit different there is also the Harewood Speed Hillclimb where you can go watch the racing or have a go yourself with lessons through their Driving Academy.

Eating & drinking

Within Harewood there is the traditional Harewood Arms Hotel which gives locals a convenient spot to go for a drink or enjoy some classic pub food. Also in Harewood is the Muddy Boots Café ideal for a coffee and cake, or why not enjoy one of their bistro nights, where they serve a themed menu featuring fresh produce. Surrounding local towns also provide more varied options of pubs, bars, and restaurants, only a short taxi journey away.

The towns surrounding Harewood offer a range of supermarkets with a large Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Aldi all just a short drive away. The nearby towns of Harrogate and Wetherby provide a range of independent shops as well as larger high street stores, giving you options for days out shopping.

History

Harewood House was once home to royalty, in 1929 Princess Mary, the daughter of King George V, moved into Harewood House with husband Henry Lascelles, the 6th Earl of Harewood. She lived here until the Second World War when the house was then converted into a convalescent hospital before returning with her family following the end of the war. She lived here till 1965 when she sadly died following a heart attack within the Harewood House Grounds.

Situated on the A61 the area also benefits from being close to motorway networks including the A1, making Harewood perfect for commuters.
