Shadwell is an idyllic village in the North East of West Yorkshire. Located just 7 miles from Leeds City Centre, only 2.9 miles from Roundhay and with easy access to York.

Things To Do

Shadwell has an abundance of things to do nearby. With Roundhay Park, one of the largest parks in Europe, just an 8 minute drive away, which hosts a whole range of events throughout the year, from concerts to food festivals, you’ll never be short of something to do. Prefer something closer to home? Shadwell has a variety of stunning woodland walks and open spaces, ideal for an idyllic Sunday stroll or a picnic on a summer’s day. Find your inner zen at Shadwell Studio, with many classes on offer, including Yoga and Pilates, you will certainly find the right one for you. For sports lovers, there is a selection of golf, cricket, football, tennis and Rugby clubs, which are within a ten minute drive from the village centre.

Eating & Drinking

There are plenty of local cafes and restaurants in the village that serve great food and drink. Ego at the Wellington is a crowd favourite amongst the locals, with a Mediterranean lunch and dinner menu, that will certainly satisfy the tastebuds. For a drink and a catchup, head to The New Inn, the local pub with a great beer garden to sit back and relax in summer or cosy up by the fire on winter nights. Alternatively, if it’s flavour, spice and authenticity you’re after, The Shadwell Tandoori is a must try for an indoor meal or a takeaway. Serving all your curry favourites including Tikka Masala, Chicken Balti, Sag Aloo and much more, you will be spoilt for choice.

Shopping

The village has a host of local businesses and amenities of its own. Including a greengrocers, hairdressers, local post office, bakery and even dry cleaners. However, if you are wanting some high street shops and a supermarket, then the surrounding towns and cities can offer them for a short drive.

Transport

Shadwell has great transport links to and from the surrounding areas. There are over 4 different buses that take you into the centre of Leeds that operate regularly. When travelling by car, there is fantastic access to connecting roads for the M1 and M62. Excellent for commuting, Leeds Bradford airport is just a 23 minute drive from the village, with the closest train station 3.2 miles away in Crossgates.

History

In the early 19th Century Shadwell was still a village with fewer than 200 residents and contained just 11 farms and 2 inns. However, from the middle century, more people became attracted to the area and homes were made out of the local quarries. Today, there are over just 1800 residents in Shadwell.
