Moortown Area Guide

Moortown is a popular suburb located within the LS17 area of Leeds. Situated between Roundhay and Gledhow, Moortown has become one of the most sought-after locations in Leeds. Moortown has several housing estates within the area making it popular with a range of residents.

Activities

There is lots to do within Moortown and the surrounding areas. Take a trip to Harewood House and explore the gardens, burn off some energy on the adventure playground or spot some species in the Bird Garden. Continuing the Wildlife theme, Tropical World is just 1 mile outside of Moortown and is a great indoor activity for the whole family. When the sun shines take a stroll into Roundhay Park or have a round of golf at Moortown’s very own golf club.

Food and drink

Bars and restaurants in the area are not in short supply! Head to the Corner House Coffee Bar and Kitchen for coffees, craft beers or cocktails to accompany one of their freshly cooked dishes. On Gledhow Valley Road you’ll find El Bareto, the perfect venue for a taste of tapas in an authentic and friendly atmosphere. If you’re looking for places for a drink, Street Lane is full of bars and restaurants including the ever popular Banyan.

Shopping

For your grocery needs, there is both a large Sainsburys and Marks & Spencer within Moortown itself. Down the road in Meanwood you will also find both Aldi and Waitrose. Moortown is home to a mixture of amenities including charity shops, convenience stores, banks and many independent businesses.

Transport

Moortown is just a 4.5 mile drive from Leeds City Centre. Although there is no train station in Moortown, there are plenty of bus routes offering links to Ripon, Harrogate, Leeds and neighbouring suburbs. Moortown is only a has excellent links to the Ring Road making for efficient travel for commuters.

History

By the 1900’s the area had mostly become farmlands and quarry sites. Eventually small developments started to pop up and larger houses were built for the wealthy moving out of the city centre.

Schools

Moortown is within close proximity to Chapel Allerton and Alwoodley and as a result, there is a wide range of schools in the area. Within a 3 mile radius of Moortown, there are around 20 primary schools to choose from, with 10 of those rated as Outstanding in the most recent Ofsted reports. Moortown and surrounding areas are also home to several large secondary schools offering education to ages 11-18 including the Independent Grammar School in Alwoodley.
