Heaton is a residential district and lies west of Bolton town centre and south of Smithills. The main road through Heaton is Chorley New Road. With its many leafy cul-de-sacs and well-kept streets tucked away on each side of the main road, the residential areas surrounding Chorley New Road feature some of Bolton’s largest and most premium homes, both old and new.
In the area of Heaton closest to Bolton town centre is Bolton School – Bolton School is an independent day school which comprises a co-educational nursery, co-educational infant school, single sex junior schools and single sex senior schools, including sixth forms. With almost 2,400 pupils it is one of the largest independent day schools in the country and an exceptional reputation.
Markland Hill is a suburb within the north west corner of Heaton, bordering Doffcocker. Markland Hill features a Racquets Club and the popular Victoria Inn (commonly known as Fanny’s amongst locals). Another popular bar and restaurant in the area is Retreat on Chorley New Road.
Driving out of Bolton town centre on Chorley New Road, once you have passed through the areas of Heaton and the junction of Victoria and Beaumont Road, you will be in the area of Lostock. Much like the areas of Heaton and Markland Hill, Lostock is considered one of Bolton’s more affluent areas, and features Clevelands private nursery and preparatory school, a small train station, and sporting clubs such as Lostock Tennis Club, Bolton Golf Club, and Regent Park Golf Course.
Lostock, along with Heaton, Markland Hill, and pockets of Turton and Smithills are generally thought to be the most expensive places to live in Bolton, showcasing an array of large and luxurious homes.
