Bath is the only city in Britain to achieve Unesco World Heritage status, with its many elegant Georgian sweeping terraces. John Wood the Elder imprinted his Palladian vision on the city, bringing from London in 1727 the concept of spacious squares and crescents and inspired at the heart by ideas of Imperial Rome. His developments - the Parades and Queen Square - set a fashion in Bath that others were to emulate across the growing Georgian city and the Royal Crescent built between 1767 and 1774 by architect John Wood, the Younger, is one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture in the country.

The city has many independent retailers and restaurants, such as Beckford Bottle shop and Walcot House and has a charming Georgian theatre, the Theatre Royal, which is host to many pre West end shows. Royal Victoria Park, with the famous Botanical Gardens is at the heart of the city. Bath is located in a hollow between seven hills , so views of beautiful green Somerset countryside can be seen from the centre, and it is easy to get out quickly from the city to glorious country walks.

Transport links from Bath Spa station are very good, with trains to London in just over 70 minutes as well as quick access by car to M4.
